Iptables is a linux package for managing IPv4 (and optionally IPv6) packet filtering and NAT (Network Address Translation).

Iptables can be configured to function as a firewall, a NAT mechanism, a packet filter or all 3 at once.

The diversity of capabilities possible with iptables makes it a secure, stable and economical alterative to hardware based firewalls and routers or costly 3rd party firewall software.

Xandros Desktop Professional 4.1

If you have never used Xandros Desktop Professional or Xandros Business Desktop before, this section will give you an overview of it. If you’re already familiar with Xandros, you might want to skip down to the next section, which covers the changes introduced in version 4.1.

Originally developed and sold as Corel Linux, Xandros is a KDE-centric GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian. While it offers a rich desktop environment, it is possible to use the Debian package tools to adapt Xandros Desktop Professional for a variety of different uses. Its heritage plus the excellence of its design equal an operating system that is easy to use, but powerful when necessary. Xandros Desktop Professional was previously known as Xandros Business Desktop, which has seen several releases of increasing quality over the years.

The distribution includes about 1.5GB of software, though most of that is the base operating system and “filler” — ancillary KDE software and other programs that are rarely or never used. From the included Applications disc you can install several important programs like the OpenOffice.org suite, the GIMP image editor, the Adobe Acrobat Reader, the Thunderbird email client, and more. Also included in the default install is CrossOver Office 5.9.1 Standard, which allows you to run many Windows programs inside Xandros. You’ll also find a small collection of proprietary extras: the Java Runtime Environment version 1.5.0, RealPlayer G2, and hardware-accelerated Nvidia and ATI video card drivers installed and ready to go.

The officially supported method of installing new software (and updating currently installed programs) is through the Xandros Networks framework. This consists of a self-contained program that both tracks your current software situation and informs you of other applications that you can install. It’s much like Linspire’s Click N Run (CNR) system, though Xandros Networks is not integrated into the KDE menu structure like CNR is. Lastly, Xandros Networks has a taskbar notification applet that tells you when software updates are available.

The general “look and feel” of Xandros Desktop Professional is like a cross between Windows XP and Sun Java Desktop System. It’s easy to use and navigate if you’re used to the Windows “Start menu” interface philosophy, but is limited in all the same ways. One thing you won’t find in Xandros is a high degree of clutter — the Launch menu is clean, focused, and easy to navigate. Most other desktop GNU/Linux operating systems will have up to three separate Web browsers, office suites, and email programs. Xandros, in contrast, only has one standard program for each purpose.

Desktop Professional is only one of Xandros Inc.’s GNU/Linux products. The others include two home desktop products; a deployment management server; a business server edition; and an education desktop and server edition for schools.

Orang Amerika yang naif dan berpikir bahwa mereka hidup dalam suatu masyarakat yang bebas harus menyaksikan video ini yang direkam oleh para mahasiswa pada Pidato 17 September, Hari Konstitusi, Senator John Kerry, di University of Florida, Gainesville.

Pada akhir pidato Kerry, Andrew Meyer, seorang mahasiswa jurnalistik, berusia 21 tahun, dipilih Senator Kerry untuk mengajukan beberapa pertanyaan. Meyer mengenggam sebuah buku karya wartawan investigatif BBC, Greg Palast, Armed Madhouse, dan bertanya apakah Kerry sadar jika investigasi Palast menemukan bahwa Kerry sebenarnya memenangi pemilu (presiden pada 2004 melawan George W. Bush). Mengapa?, Meyer bertanya lagi, Kerry menerima hasil pemilu begitu cepat sementara terdapat begitu banyak insiden penipuan suara yang jelas nyata?

Mengapa?, Meyer meneruskan pertanyaannya, Kerry menolak untuk mempertimbangkan pemecatan Bush padahal Bush akan memulai agresi militer lain, dan kali ini terhadap Iran?

Pada titik inilah “sang pelindung masyarakat”—polisi—memutuskan bahwa Meyer terlalu banyak bicara. Mereka menangkap Meyer dan mulai menyeretnya (dari aula pertemuan). Meyer berkata berkali-kali, “Saya tidak melakukan kesalahan apa pun.” Menurut hukum kita, ia memang tidak melakuan kesalahan. Ia tidak mengancam seorang pun dan tidak menyerang siapa pun.

Namun, polisi memutuskan bahwa Meyer, seorang warganegara Amerika, tidak lagi mempunyai hak untuk berbicara merdeka dan tidak memiliki perlindungan konstitutional. Mereka melemparkannya ke lantai dan menyetrumnya di hadapan Senator Kerry dan para audien mahasiswa, yang kemudian merekam dalam video sebuah tindakan brutalitas polisi yang tak diragukan lagi. Meyer ditangkap dan dipenjarakan atas tuduhan palsu: “mengganggu acara publik.”

Pertanyaan yang perlu kita ajukan mengapa seorang senator Amerika Serikat hanya berdiri di sana sementara para penjahat Gestapo sedang melanggar hak-hak konstitutional seorang mahasiswa yang berpartisipasi dalam suatu peristiwa publik, mengasarinya secara nyata di hadapan setiap orang, dan kemudian memenjarakannya atas sebuah tuduhan palsu?

Kelemahan Kerry tidak hanya di hadapan penipuan pemilu, tidak hanya di hadapan perang-perang Bush yang adalah ilegal menurut standar Nuremberg, tetapi juga di hadapan polisi-polisi jahat yang mengangkangi hak-hak konstitutional warganegara Amerika. Semua itu jelas-jelas membuatnya tidak pantas menjadi presiden AS, dan ia pun tidak cocok untuk menjadi seorang senator AS.

Biasanya ketika polisi melanggar hak-hak konstitutional dan melakukan aksi-aksi kekejaman, mereka melakukan semua itu ketika tahu bahwa tak seorang pun sedang menyaksikan mereka, bukan di hadapan suatu audien yang besar. Jelaslah, polisi kini menjadi lebih berani dalam pelanggaran mereka terhadap hak-hak dan warganegara. Lalu, apa yang menjelaskan keberanian baru polisi untuk melanggar hak-hak dan mengasari warganegara yang tanpa sebab ini?

Jawabannya adalah bahwa polisi—kebanyakan dari mereka memiliki kepribadian otoriter—telah memandang bahwa hak-hak konstitutional tidak lagi dilindungi. Presiden Bush tidak melindungi hak-hak konstitutional kita. Tidak juga Wakil Presiden Cheney, Jaksa Agung, dan Konggres AS. Sama seperti Kerry mengizinkan hak-hak Meyer untuk dilanggar di hadapannya, Konggres memberi peluang bagi Bush untuk melepaskan hak setiap orang, termasuk warganegara Amerika, dari perlindungan konstitutional dan menangkap mereka tanpa menghadirkan bukti apa pun.

Berapa lama lagi ini akan terjadi hingga Kerry sendiri atau beberapa senator lain akan diseret dari mimbar mereka dan disetrum?

Kaum Republikan Bush bersama keterlibatan Demokrat secara esensial telah menjadikan akuntabilitas pemerintahan berakhir di AS. Pemerintah AS telah memasukkan 80.000 orang, termasuk warganegara biasa Amerika, ke dalam daftar “tidak terbang.” Tak seorang pun tahu mengapa mereka ada di dalam daftar tersebut, dan tak seorang pun yang ada di daftar itu tahu bagaimana caranya agar bisa keluar dari sana. Satu tindakan yang tidak akuntabel dari administrasi Bush telah menyebabkan mereka ada di sana.

Keamanan bandara kerap menghambat dan melecehkan orang-orang yang justru tidak sesuai dengan setiap definisi yang diketahui mengenai teroris. Nalini Ghuman, seorang warganegara kelahiran Inggris dan profesor musik pada Mills College di California dicegat pada saat kembali dari perjalanan ke Inggris oleh petugas-petugas bersenjata di pintu pesawat udara dan membawanya jauh. Para penjahat Gestapo itu merobek-robek visa Amerika-nya, mengotori paspor Inggris-nya, menggeledah tubuhnya, dan mengatakan kepadanya bahwa dia harus segera meninggalkan AS ke Inggris atau, jika tidak, akan dimasukkan ke sebuah lembaga pemasyarakatan.

Profesor Ghuman, seorang lulusan Oxford University lulus dengan gelar Ph.D. dari University of California di Berkeley, mengatakan bahwa dia merasa seperti menjadi satu karakter di dalam buku Kafka, The Trial. “Saya tidak tahu kenapa ini terjadi, apa yang dituduhkan kepada saya. Tidak ada peluang untuk membela diri saya. Seseorang benar-benar tidak berdaya.” Lebih daripada satu tahun kemudian, masih tetap tidak ada jawabannya.

Kaum Republikan Bush dan para penjilat Demokrat, atas nama “keamanan”, telah menjadikan kita semua tidak berdaya. Sementara Senator Kerry dan para kolega Demokrat-nya berdiri dengan diam, pemerintah Bush telah mencuri negeri ini dari kita dan mengubah kita menjadi korban.
